The Department of Physics, established on July 9, 1971, under Prof. J.C. Palathingal, has been a hub for postgraduate teaching and research. It collaborates with leading institutes in India and abroad and excels in fields like Nuclear Physics, Condensed Matter Physics, Materials Science, Astrophysics, Radiation Physics, Theoretical Physics, Plasma Physics, Non-convensional energy source, and Nanoscience. The department fosters cutting-edge research, scientific temper, and societal progress through scientific advancements. The Madhava Observatory, honoring the renowned mathematician and astronomer, supports observational astronomy. The department features a centralized Liquid Nitrogen Plant, advanced laboratories, in-house internet with 50 PCs, and a library housing 5,400 books. Many alumni hold prestigious positions in national and international institutions, with a significant number serving as faculty in colleges and universities. The department collaborates with the Nuclear Data Physics Centre of India for IAEA nuclear data and participates in the India-based Neutrino Observatory (INO) program.
